Why Stranger Things Is So Funny (Even When It Is Scary)

Stranger Things is a horror show, but it has a lot of comedy also. The show is set in the 1980s in a small fake town called Hawkins, Indiana, and it ran for 5 seasons on Netflix. The kids fight monsters, but they also roast each other all the time.

If you ask me, this mix is the main reason people love the show. One minute you are scared of Vecna, next minute Steve is saying something dumb and you are laughing. I think the Duffer Brothers are very smart for doing this.

The “Dick” jokes everyone keep talking about

In the latest season there is a Moby Dick line that turns into a double meaning joke, and fans on Reddit keep quoting it again and again. A lot of people also noticed there were many of these jokes in one season, and one fan even started a thread just asking why so many.

Not everyone liked it though. Some fans said it felt out of place in tense scenes. Other fans said the writers room was maybe laughing too hard at their own bits. But one Redditor made a fair point, it is basically a group of 15 year old boys (and Robin), so what else you expect? Honestly I agree with this one, teen boys talk like this.

Reactions are the real comedy

This is the part I found most interesting. Fans say the joke itself is not always the funny part. The reaction is. Steve’s deadpan “what the hell is wrong with you?” is a big fan favourite. Many people also say Murray’s reaction was even better.

Robin gets a lot of love too. Fans say it’s the dumb grin on her face that makes her lines land. I think Maya Hawke timing is really top level.

Other comedy gold moments

The “Mr. What’s it???” scene is still called a laugh out loud moment by fans.
Erica one-liners like “Ashley Klein is a snitch” keep getting repeated.

Will don’t need a night lamp. His mom already turned the whole house into a Christmas tree.
