Funny Australian Place Names

Funny Australian Place Names That Will Make You Laugh Out Loud

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Today I am going to tell you about some really funny Australian place names. Honestly, I have never been to Australia in my life. But some of my good friends are from there. I met them while playing League of Legends (LoL) and we play together almost every weekend. One day in voice chat one friend said he is driving to “Nar Nar Goon” and I laughed so hard I died in the game. After that I start collecting these names, and I also checked what Aussies on Reddit are saying about them. So let’s start.

Why Australia Has So Many Funny Place Names

Before the list, let me tell you why this happens. From what I read on Reddit, there are mainly three reasons. Some names come from Aboriginal words, and they just sound funny to English speakers. Some were named by old explorers and surveyors who were maybe tired or bored. And some are just plain rude, and nobody bother to change them. I think this is what makes Australia so unique, every map is like a comedy show.

Classic Funny Towns

Tittybong

If you ask Aussies on Reddit which town has the funniest name, Tittybong comes up again and again. It is a tiny place in Victoria. I told my LoL friend about it and he said “mate, everyone knows Tittybong”. So I guess it is famous there.

Nar Nar Goon

This is my personal favourite and the reason this whole blog exist. Nar Nar Goon is a town in Victoria. On Reddit, one user made a great joke with it where someone asks “want to bring beers tonight?” and the answer is “Nar Nar, Goon”. For people who don’t know, “goon” is Aussie slang for cheap boxed wine. So basically it means “no no, bring wine”. I think this is the best joke a town name can make.

Humpybong

Humpybong is in Queensland and people on r/funny love it. It is an old name for the Redcliffe area near Brisbane. It gets laughs just because of how it sound. But it also has some history behind it, it comes from Aboriginal language. So it is funny and also interesting at same time.

Rude or Cheeky Favourites

Mount Disappointment

This one is my favourite for being so honest. Mount Disappointment is in Victoria, near Whittlesea. A Reddit user explained that the first guys who climbed it got this name because they expected a better view from the top. Imagine climbing a whole mountain and feeling sad at the end. If you ask me, this is the most relatable place name in the world.

Bullshit Hill

Yes guys, this is a real name on the map. Bullshit Hill is in South Australia, not far from Peterborough. On r/MapPorn someone joked that they are done with everything and moving to Bullshit Hill. I feel like many of us have that feeling on Monday morning. Fun fact, it is actually a proper mountain, about 613 metres high. So it’s a big hill with a very bad word name.

Dirty Dick Creek

This one is in North Queensland and Redditors had lot of cheeky jokes about it. I will not write those jokes here because my blog is family friendly. But you can guess.

Aboriginal Names That Sound Funny

Many of these names come from Aboriginal languages. They are not funny in their original meaning, they only sound funny to English ears. So I want to say that we are laughing at the sound, not at the culture.

Koolyanobbing

Koolyanobbing is in Western Australia and it has a mine there. One Redditor said he always laughs when he talk about it, because his company do some work at the mine. Another user made a joke that it is a good place to go after Cockburn (which is also a real place in WA!). I think Aussies are very creative with jokes.

Doodlakine

Doodlakine is another small place in Western Australia. People on Reddit say it makes them chuckle just by saying it out loud. Try it once, say “Doodlakine” three times fast. You will smile, I promise.

Bumbang Island

Bumbang Island is in Victoria, near a town called Robinvale. On r/australia, one user said Bumbang Island always gives them a chuckle. Honestly, same here.

Small Gems and Suburbs

Woodenbong

Woodenbong is a small town in New South Wales. On Reddit people just drop the name alone as an answer, no explanation needed. I think that tells you everything.

Rooty Hill

Rooty Hill is a suburb in western Sydney. For people outside Australia, “root” is Aussie slang for, well… something adult. So you can understand why locals find it funny. My LoL friend actually lives near Sydney and he said everyone there has made at least one Rooty Hill joke in their life.

Useless Loop

Useless Loop is in Western Australia, near Shark Bay. Reddit users love it because it sounds like a place going nowhere. I think whoever named it had a very bad day.

By the way, if you like funny names like these, you will also love my list of funny names like Mike Oxlong. Honestly, some Aussie towns sound like they came straight from that list. And if you want more silly names from history, check my blog on funny dinosaur names, some of them are even more weird then these places.

My Experience With My Aussie Friends

I want to tell one more small thing. When I first met my Aussie friends in LoL, I didn’t understand half of their slang. Words like “arvo”, “goon” and “root” were totally new for me. But after these funny place names, I learned lot of slang very fast. Now whenever someone in our team plays badly, we say “go back to Useless Loop”. It became our inside joke. So honestly, these names are not just funny, they also helped me make good friends. My friends also love roasting our shortest teammate, so if you want some fun lines for your squad, read my short people jokes

Final Words

So these were some of the funniest Australian place names. I have tried to cover classic towns, cheeky names, Aboriginal names and small suburbs, all based on what real Aussies are saying on Reddit. I also added exact location and map link for each one so you can check them yourself. I still have not visited Australia, but one day I want to go and take a photo with the Nar Nar Goon sign with my LoL friends. If you know any other funny names, tell me in the comments.
