Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Are you looking for some funny Spanish jokes to make your friends laugh? Well in that case you are headed to the right place. Today I am going to share some of the best Spanish jokes with their English meaning.
In Spanish, a joke is called a “chiste”. And trust me, Spanish speakers have a lot of them. For this blog I spend a lot of time on Reddit, where native speakers and learners share their favorite chistes. Some of these jokes are so bad that they become good, if you ask me. So let’s start.
Why Spanish Jokes Are So Funny
Most Spanish jokes are funny because of wordplay. In Spanish, many words sound almost same as other words, or one word has two meanings. For example “nada” means “nothing”, but it also means “he swims”. Spanish speakers love to play with words like this.
Also one small thing you should know. A joke in Spanish is called a “chiste”, which is a funny line or story you tell to someone. A “broma” is more like a prank you play on someone, as Fluent in 3 Months explains. So if you want a joke from your friend, just say “cuéntame un chiste”.
Most of the jokes I found on Reddit are short and silly, just like dad jokes in English. Spanish speakers even have a name for them, “chistes malos”, which means bad jokes. Honestly, I think bad jokes are the best jokes.
Short Funny Spanish Jokes From Reddit
Let me start with the short ones, which Spanish speakers call “chistes cortos”. I found these on r/Spanish, a big Reddit community where learners and native speakers talk about the language. I have added the English meaning so you can understand the joke easy.
| Spanish Joke | English Meaning | Why It’s Funny | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¿Qué hace un pez perezoso? Nada. | What does a lazy fish do? Nothing. | “Nada” means “nothing”, but it also means “he swims”. | r/Spanish |
| ¿Por qué el tomate no toma café? Porque toma té. | Why doesn’t the tomato drink coffee? Because it drinks tea. | “Toma té” (drinks tea) sounds exactly like “tomate”. | r/Spanish |
| ¿Qué hace el perro con el taladro? Taladrando. | What is the dog doing with the drill? Drilling. | “Taladrando” sounds like “‘ta ladrando”, short for “está ladrando” (he is barking). | r/Spanish |
| ¿Qué fruta siempre llega tarde? Espera. | Which fruit is always late? Wait. | “Espera” means “wait”, but it also sounds like “es pera” (it’s a pear). | r/Spanish |
The taladro one is my favorite. When I first got it, I really laughed out loud.
There is also a cute one about a fork and a spoon from the same thread. A fork sees a spoon crossing the street and shouts “¡Cuchara! ¡Cuchara!” The spoon does not even turn around. So the fork says “Parece que no es cuchara”, which means “Looks like she is not a spoon”.
But “no es cuchara” sounds like “no escuchara”, like she can’t hear him. If you ask me, this one is very clever.
“¿Qué Le Dijo…?” Jokes
This is maybe the most common joke type in Spanish. It always start with “¿Qué le dijo…?”, which means “What did one thing say to the other?” If you ask me, these are the best jokes for beginners because the words are very simple.
| Spanish Joke | English Meaning | Why It’s Funny |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Qué le dijo un techo a otro techo? Techo de menos. | What did one roof say to another roof? I miss you. | “Techo de menos” sounds like “te echo de menos”, which means “I miss you” in Spain (r/Spanish). |
| ¿Qué le dijo el 1 al 10? Para ser como yo, tienes que ser sincero. | What did 1 say to 10? To be like me, you have to be sincere. | “Sincero” (sincere) sounds like “sin cero” (without zero). |
| ¿Qué le dijo una uva verde a una uva morada? ¡Respira, respira! | What did the green grape say to the purple grape? Breathe, breathe! | The purple grape looks like it is choking, so it needs to breathe. |
| ¿Qué le dijo una impresora a otra? ¿Esa hoja es tuya o es impresión mía? | What did one printer say to the other? Is that paper yours or is it my impression? | “Impresión” means a print, and also a feeling. |
| ¿Qué le dijo una pared a otra pared? Nos vemos en la esquina. | What did one wall say to the other? See you at the corner. | Two walls always meet at the corner. |
| ¿Qué le dijo el café al azúcar? Sin ti mi vida es amarga. | What did the coffee say to the sugar? Without you my life is bitter. | Coffee without sugar is bitter, so it’s like a love line. |
The printer one is very smart, I think. And the roof one is perfect to send on WhatsApp when you miss someone.
Funny Spanish Animal and Food Jokes
Animals and food are everywhere in Spanish jokes. I think this is because the words are easy, so even a beginner can get the joke. I also found some good ones on Fluent in 3 Months, a popular language learning blog.
| Spanish Joke | English Meaning | Why It’s Funny |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Cuáles son las vacas más perezosas? ¡Vacaciones! | Which cows are the laziest? Vacations! | “Vaca” means cow, and “vacaciones” means holidays. |
| ¿Qué hace una abeja en el gimnasio? ¡Zumba! | What does a bee do at the gym? Zumba! | “Zumbar” means to buzz, and Zumba is also a dance workout. |
| —¡Socorro, me ha picado una víbora! —¿Cobra? —No, gratis. | Help, a snake bit me! A cobra? No, it was free. | “Cobra” is a snake, but it also means “it charges money”. |
| ¿Por qué el pato le tiene envidia a la silla? Porque tiene cuatro patas. | Why is the duck jealous of the chair? Because it has four legs. | “Pata” means leg, and it also means a female duck. |
| ¿Cuál es el animal más antiguo? La cebra, porque está en blanco y negro. | What is the oldest animal? The zebra, because it is in black and white. | Old movies and photos were black and white. |
| ¿Cuál es el café más peligroso del mundo? El ex-preso. | What is the most dangerous coffee in the world? The ex-prisoner. | “Expreso” (espresso) sounds like “ex-preso”, a person who was in jail. |
There is also a longer version of the “espera” joke. An apple is waiting for the bus, and a banana comes and asks “¿Hace mucho que usted espera?” (Have you been waiting long?). The apple says “No, siempre he sido manzana” (No, I have always been an apple). Because the apple hear “es pera”, like “are you a pear?”
Honestly, the cobra joke is the one I tell the most. It is short and people get it fast.
Classic Spanish Jokes Everyone Knows
Some Spanish jokes are so old that almost every Spanish speaker knows them. Here are the classics I think you should know.
Jaimito Jokes
Jaimito is a naughty school kid who always gives smart answers to his teacher. He is like “Little Johnny” in English jokes, as Fluent in 3 Months explains. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, the same kid is often called Pepito. A lot of these jokes are rude, so here are two clean ones:
- —Jaimito, ¿qué planeta va después de Marte? —¡Miércole! (Jaimito, which planet comes after Mars? Wednesday!) “Marte” sounds like “martes” (Tuesday), so Jaimito says the next day, “miércoles”.
- —Jaimito, dime una palabra con muchas oes. —¡Gooooool! (Jaimito, tell me a word with many O’s. Goooool!) Every football fan will love this one.
Van Dos y Se Cae el del Medio
This one is very famous. “Van dos y se cae el del medio” means “Two guys are walking and the one in the middle falls down.” It makes no sense, and that is the whole joke. If you ask me, it is so stupid that it become genius.
The Estufa Joke
—¿Cuánto cuesta esta estufa? —Cinco mil dólares. —¡Esto es una estafa! —No señor, es una estufa.
In English it is: “How much is this heater? Five thousand dollars. This is a rip-off! No sir, it’s a heater.” The joke works because “estafa” (scam) and “estufa” (heater) sound almost same.
Spanglish Jokes That Work in Both Languages
These are my favorite if I am honest. You need to know a little English and a little Spanish to get them, so they are perfect for learners.
The Socks Joke
This one I found on r/SpanishAIlines. An American man goes to a shop in Mexico to buy socks, but he don’t know the Spanish word “calcetines”. The shop guy shows him a lot of things, and nothing is right.
At last he shows a pair of socks, and the man shouts “¡Eso sí que es!” (That’s it!). The shop guy says “If you can spell it, why you didn’t say it before?” Because “eso sí que es” sounds like S-O-C-K-S.

| Joke | Why It’s Funny |
|---|---|
| —¿Cómo se escribe “nariz” en inglés? —No sé. —¡Correcto! | “No sé” (I don’t know) has the same letters as “nose”. |
| A Spanish magician says he will disappear on the count of three. “Uno, dos…” and he vanished without a “tres”. | “Without a tres” sounds like “without a trace”. |
| —¿Cómo se dice “zapato” en inglés? —A shoe. —¡Salud! —Gracias. | “A shoe” sounds like “achoo” (a sneeze), so the other guy says “bless you”. |
I think the magician joke is the perfect way to break the ice with someone who is learning Spanish.
How I Use Spanish Jokes to Learn the Language
Jokes are not only for laughing. They are also a very good way to learn Spanish, because to get the joke you have to understand both meanings of the word. Here are some simple tips that work for me:
- Say the joke out loud. Many Spanish jokes only work when you hear them, like “taladrando” and “‘ta ladrando”.
- Write down both meanings. For example “sincero” and “sin cero”. You will remember these words for long time.
- Tell the joke to a friend. Even if the joke is bad, your friend will laugh at you trying, and that is also fine.
- Join Reddit communities. r/Spanish gets around 303K weekly visitors and r/learnspanish around 34K. People share chistes there and explain them if you don’t get it.
